Compress PDF
Make a PDF smaller in your browser. Scale down oversized images, re-encode photos and clean up the file's structure, while text, links and forms stay as they are. Nothing is uploaded.
On your device. Your PDFs stay in this page session. Download the result before leaving or changing language.
How to make a PDF smaller
- Choose one PDF up to 100 MiB and 500 pages. The tool shows how much of the file is images, which is where most of the savings come from.
- Pick a level. Recommended scales images above 150 DPI down to 150 DPI and saves photos as JPEG. Strong goes down to 100 DPI. Lossless only rewrites the file's structure.
- Press Compress PDF. The result shows the old and new size and what changed. Use Preview result to zoom in on scans before you download.
- Download the new file, such as report_compressed.pdf. If no smaller version is found, the tool says so and your original stays as it is.
What changes and what doesn't
Only images and the file's internal structure change. Text, fonts, vector graphics, links, bookmarks, form fields and their values, annotations, page sizes and rotation are kept. Text stays selectable and searchable.
Images keep enough detail for the size at which they appear on the page: a photo shown 4 inches wide keeps 600 pixels across on Recommended. Images are never made larger, and an image whose new version isn't smaller is left as it was. Screenshots and diagrams stay lossless; only photos become JPEG.
Images left as they are
CMYK print images, special colour spaces, JBIG2, JPEG 2000 and fax-encoded scans, 1-bit and 16-bit images, and images with custom colour mapping are kept byte for byte. The result lists how many were skipped and why.
Signed PDFs
Compressing changes the file, so digital signatures will no longer be valid. A signed PDF is compressed only after you tick Compress anyway. A visible signature mark is not proof of a valid digital signature.
Limits
One PDF at a time, up to 100 MiB and 500 pages. Encrypted PDFs are not supported. A PDF that is mostly text and fonts usually shrinks very little, because text is already stored compactly.
Where do my files go?
The PDF is compressed in your browser and is not uploaded. Nothing is saved: files are cleared when you clear them, leave the page or change language, so download the result first.
The site downloads application code and may record a basic tool view or successful use. Third-party analytics and session replay stay disabled for this page session. Entering from another page may reload once to start that private session.
